ADULT AUTISM DIAGNOSIS IN WEST HARTFORD, CT

An autism evaluation in West Hartford, CT can confirm an adult autism diagnosis.

Your whole life you may have been told to “toughen up” or have been asked, “Why can’t you act more appropriately?” If it wasn’t others telling you that, maybe it was your inner critic asking yourself why you’re different from everyone else.

You know that you experience issues that others don’t – maybe bright lights bother you or certain noises feel like nails on a chalkboard. You know, logically, the noise isn’t actually nails on a chalkboard, but to you, it feels that way. You feel weird; you know you’re different, but you don’t understand why. An adult autism evaluation can help.

You’re experiencing some or all of the following:

  • Difficulty with social interactions or forming relationships

  • Communication challenges, such as difficulty making eye contact, difficulty understanding sarcasm, jokes, or expressions

  • Repetitive behaviors or rigid routines, such as fidgeting with objects, nail-biting, or a compulsive need to do the same things daily

  • Sensory processing issues which may include sensitivity to light, sound, or touch

  • Focused interests or specific hobbies that seem more intense than typical

To get clarity, validation, and answers, you may have tried:

  • Googling your symptoms

  • Going online and taking a free self-diagnostic adult autism assessment test

  • Reading blogs or websites

  • Listening to podcasts

  • Talking to neurodivergent friends or reading through Reddit forums to understand how your symptoms may compare to other people’s experiences with autism

But none of those things have truly helped because what you are looking for is a definitive answer about whether or not YOU have an autism diagnosis.

And only an adult autism assessment test with a competent evaluator can confirm for sure if you meet the criteria for an adult autism diagnosis.

Why get a diagnosis in West Hartford, CT?

If you want to finally understand why you are the way that you are and get the validation that you aren’t making things up, pursuing an evaluation for Autism Spectrum Disorder is the way to go.

Imagine a life where you no longer feel shame because you understand why you are different.

Imagine a life where you no longer feel shame about receiving necessary accommodations.

In the past, you may have struggled when others didn’t.

Receiving a diagnosis can allow you to be easier on yourself because now you understand the reason for feeling and behaving in the way that you do.

The diagnosis finally helps your family believe that you weren’t making things up or just being “dramatic.”

Receiving a diagnosis means that you now know you’re not “lazy,” “fussy,” or a “weirdo” because you can’t do certain things well due to sensory issues or because you struggle to maintain relationships.

Getting an adult autism evaluation and receiving a diagnosis ends a life of wondering what’s wrong with you. It ends the cycle of being misdiagnosed with other mental illnesses and taking medication that doesn’t work. It allows you to request the accommodations you need to function. It will enable your therapist to adapt their technique to you so that they can help you that much more.

Gayle Weill, LCSW

What happens during an adult autism evaluation with me?

We will meet for an online autism evaluation, which will take 2-5 sessions (sometimes more, depending on each individual situation).

01

We will discuss the symptoms that led you to seek this adult autism assessment test, your family, and your medical history. I will ask you several questions to determine if an autism diagnosis makes sense for your particular situation. The autism evaluation questions help identify strengths and challenges related to social skills, communication, and behavioral patterns.

02

At the end of the evaluation, I will write a report of the evaluation findings in the form of a letter. The letter will provide recommendations for additional supports, including but not limited to referrals for therapy (if indicated), educational supports, community resources, and whether further neuropsychological testing is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Payment can be made by HSA, FSA, credit, or debit card at time of service. I am not accepting insurance at this time.

  • $300 per session that it takes to complete the evaluation (usually completed in 2-5 sessions), and an additional $250 for the letter of recommended support and next steps.

  • At this time, I only meet with people for autism evaluations online through Zoom.

  • Yes, that is certainly an option. We can speak verbally regarding the evaluation findings. However, the letter is highly recommended so that you can receive written findings and recommendations about next steps.

  • There is a difference between a self-administered free test online and an evaluation administered by a competent professional. Self-administered tests can provide insight, but due to the complexity of an autism diagnosis, receiving a test from an autism evaluator will give a definitive diagnosis.

  • Depending on each individual situation, the evaluation will take place in 2-5 meetings, each lasting 1 hour.

  • I will update this as time progresses. At this time, I have immediate availability for autism evaluations, and there is no current waiting list.

  • Not a problem, we’re all human, and no one knows everything. I will help you to understand the questions in how they may or may not apply to your unique circumstances. If you have difficulty understanding a question, or need time to process, that’s okay too. I am patient, and will do my utmost to help you feel comfortable!

  • You will be provided a letter of recommendation for additional support. You can use this for your own reference to make the necessary recommended accommodations to show employers, family members, and even Disney World if you want, so you don’t have to wait in lines, etc. If you wish to seek disability assistance, however, further testing from a psychiatrist may be necessary in order to receive neuropsychological and IQ testing.

  • People who want validation and understanding about why they behave in the way that they do, and want recommendations and a document to advocate for additional supports. It is not for people who want government disability services. For that, neuropsychological testing may be necessary.

  • I am a licensed clinical social worker who has received additional training regarding how to assess for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Although I cannot provide neuropsychological testing that you can use to apply for disability services, my letter explaining your diagnosis is valid for providing necessary recommendations and accommodations in many settings and will provide educated suggestions regarding how you can improve your functioning. Getting a formal diagnosis from a psychiatrist is often a much longer wait time, and for many people’s situations, it isn’t necessary.

  • At this time, I do not evaluate minors.

  • Evaluations completed by a trained autism evaluator are important because individuals have the right to a definitive answer as to whether or not they have autism. An autism evaluation near me provides clarity to a life of wondering.

  • Autism cannot be cured. It is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition. However, with necessary support, one can improve their symptoms. Improvements in communication difficulty, social skills, and everyday stressors are definitely possible!

  • By increasing awareness, we can reduce stigma and ensure that people with autism receive the support, resources, and accommodations they need to thrive in society. Autism awareness is critical because it promotes understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism. Awareness also helps identify autism earlier, leading to better access to interventions and services.
